Owners Find HTC EVO 4G Won't Work After OTA Update
Although the HTC EVO 4G is an awesome Android phone with a big screen, it’s had it’s share of problems. Things are just getting worse for the poor EVO owners, as now the most recent OTA update for the device is causing widespread reports of bricked devices.

Multiple users are reporting that the update will freeze their phone on the ‘Syncing’ icon, and than it will no longer respond, even after a battery pull. This update was supposed to fixed several small bugs and some WiFi issue, but it’s probably done much worse than that.
Part of the problem may be that the phone is not responding during the update. Several user reported on IntoMobile’s post of this story that during the update, the EVO 4G will be unresponsive for 5 minutes. Doing a battery pull during this (as with any firmware update) will brick your phone, no question (I’ve seen similar things happen with BlackBerries and iPhones). So it’s possible that people are causing their own demise here. But still, others report that they didn’t touch their phone for two hours and it’s still ending up bricked.
What makes the issue worse is that the EVO 4G is still in low supply. Users who returned their broken phones to Radio Shack were told “Sorry, we don’t have any” and Sprint customer support said something similar to customers who called in. Fortunately for those who bought their EVO 4G from Best Buy – they seem to have some replacement units on hand.
Any TFTS readers having problems with the most recent update?

I think it might be individuals causing this problem. i read this morning that there was
an OTA update for the Evo but when i checked manually no update showed. then i read an article that said so issues with bricked phones were reported.
about 30 min later i check and see the update available so i went ahead and did it.
i downloaded the update and nothing happened so i turned off the phone. when i turn it back on there is a message saying that it is ready for install so i installed it. During the installation i did
get the syncing icon. then my phone turned on and off several times. it did seem like forever that my phone was in the syncing icon but i think it just seamed that much since i wanted the update to be done. At one point when it shut off by itself it had the 4G logo there for almost a minute. the update took some 10 15 min but then my phone came back up and it is working fine.
i think people are causing the problem by either turning the phone off or taking the battery out as they might think it is stuck on the syncing screen as shown in the picture in this article. but i think most people will not admit that they did either thing and just say it was an issue with the update.
i do have a question for those of you that have got a replacement phone for whatever issue not just the issue with bricked phones. when you say a replacement phone do you mean you just get a phone unit by itself like when they send a replacement when you phone is messed up are you actually exchanging all the things that came in the original box for a completely new in a new box with everything new?
Yeah, I had the same problem. If you think about it sprint should have told us it was going to take up to 30 minutes to update.
After the update yesterday (that took around 15 minutes), I noticed that the strength of the signal went down, before in my house I had 4 bars and now only 1, some times 2 and driving (commuting) to work, before in the car BT I had the full bars, now no more than 2 and the calls sound really bad. Not sure if this update did something with this setup to extend the battery life. Any one has the same issue?
