American Dell Streak Box Spotted, Unboxed [Streak Fan Site Reveals Streak's US Packaging, Lots Of Plastic, Only Works On AT&T 3G Bands]

The Dell Streak fans over at ‘Streak Smart’ got their hands on the US version of the Dell Streak. Unlike the rather bland UK packaging with a lot of cardboard – the US packaging seems to almost take some Apple-esque cues with lots of plastic and the device in full display.

The Dell Streak looks to be pretty awesome, and they show off the Streak in it’s 5-inch glory, with it’s 1GHz processor and what not. Unfortunately, we also learned that the device is pretty much for AT&T users only. According to the website, their Streak came from Dell preconfigured with an AT&T SIM card for testing (not uncommon with review units).

As you can see below – they show the Dell Streak has a cool configuration screen where you can adjust the cell radio’s band connectivity. Unfortunately, the Streak doesn’t seem to be able to be set to T-Mobile’s 3G WCDMA/UMTS bands (1700/2100 MHz). They were able to get EDGE 2G speeds on T-Mobile, but not the 3G speeds everybody craves.

So, it looks like this phone/tablet is pretty much an AT&T exclusive. Unfortunate news for those who had hoped to use this device on T-Mobile’s US network.

As expected, the Streak shipped running Android 1.6. The only differences between the UK and US Streaks appear to be their running different versions of baseband software. European 3G bands are even selectable via the phone. That’s very uncommon for US phones and something I hope more phone manufacturers take note of.

No Tmo for the Dell Streak? Is that a deal breaker? Chime in via comments.

There are two models of phone that have been registered with the FCC. One has AT&T frequencies, the other has T-Mobile frequencies. Dell has only shown phones with AT&T so far, but I doubt that they’ve gone through the trouble of FCC compliance if they’re not going to sell a T-Mobile specific version of the phone.
