Rumor: Droid 2 Coming On August 23rd? [Android Site Reports Next Droid 2 With Keyboard Coming Late August, With Android 2.2]

Motorola and Verizon held their little Droid X presser reveal last week. Since the invitation promised “the next generation of Droid”, we expected them to to talk about both the Droid X and the Droid 2 – but the Droid 2 (the slimmer, faster next version of the popular first Motorola Droid) was no where to be found. Now a reputable site is claiming it’s coming in two months with Android 2.2 built-in.

Popular Android news site AndroidandMe is reporting, citing a ‘trustworthy’ source of theirs that Verizon and Motorola are planning to release a “Droid 2″ on August 23rd, and it’ll be running Android 2.2 out of the box. According to this source, current prototypes of the Droid 2 are running Android 2.1 but will get Android 2.2 before launch.

As AndroidandMe points out, this will make the Droid 2 the first Android phone to come out of the box running Android 2.2. They also claim that the Droid 2 and Droid X have identical hardware inside, the only differences being (aside from the cosmetic changes) that the Droid 2 will have a smaller screen and the sliding QWERTY keyboard.

For those who want the screens big and don’t mind the lack of a QWERTY keyboard, the Droid X is set to be released on July 16 and will cost $199.
