Nintendo 3DS May Be Coming This Year, Again [Conflicting Official Reports Out Of Nintendo, Japanese Sources Imply 3DS Release Date Set For This Year]

A few days ago, Nintendo of America’s president Reggie Fils-Aime was on Jimmy Fallon’s late-night TV talk show. He told Fallon that the Nintendo 3DS would be coming next year. Nintendo was coy about the release date at E3, only saying it was coming ‘before’ March 31, 2011. Now, Reggie may be wrong.

Gaming blog Kotaku has a source who claims to be ‘close’ to Nintendo’s Japanese headquarters. This source tells the gaming blog that Reggie-san is “mistaken”. While Kotaku doesn’t report this, if the 3DS isn’t coming in 2011, then that leaves the implication that it’s coming this year.

Nintendo is a huge company valued at $37 billion and they often have different release windows for different countries. Like the DSi, it’s possible that they could be planning to release the 3DS in Japan this year, and in North America next year. It’s also possible that Reggie is wrong, or the mysterious Japanese source is wrong.

One thing is for certain – and that’s Nintendo’s being extremely coy about the Nintendo 3DS release date. We know they had to announce the 3D handheld early to beat a big leak in Japan that would have revealed the console. We reported a story some time ago where one of CVG’s source inside Nintendo UK said they were rushing the 3DS to compete with PlayStation Move and Kinect. It’s possible that with the 3DS hardware still under development, Nintendo themselves doesn’t know then it’s coming.

What are the odds we’ll see a Nintendo 3DS released in 2010?
