HTC EVO 4G Gets OTA Update from Sprint; Not Froyo Yet
Just as we told you last week, Sprint released an OTA software update today for its flagship device, the HTC EVO 4G. While we’re definitely waiting for America’s, and the world’s, first 4G Android device to get the much expected Android Froyo update, we won’t act as if this OTA made available today is not important too.

The new software version you should look for is v.1.47.651.1 and it’s available as an over-the-air download to anyone currently employing an EVO 4G as their main smartphone. The new firmware measures in at 21MB so you should have it installed in no time.
What will the update bring you? Here’s a small list of features being addressed, not that we didn’t tell you about them a few days ago:
- Improvements to Wi-Fi performance
- Exchange Active Sync improvements, including fix to issues with new account setup, PIN policy usage and Exchange Calendar 2010 Sync
- Addresses Facebook sync issue which can improve battery performance
Sure it doesn’t sound like much but given that it’s a simple install you should definitely get it especially as Sprint is preparing for the more important Froyo update which will follow at some point later this summer. If you haven’t been automatically notified of its existence then you can also search for it manually and get it out of the way already.

The carrier didn’t leak any other details regarding this pending Android 2.2 arrival to Sprint, but we’re definitely expecting the EVO 4G to get Google’s newest mobile platform before the Verizon’s Motorola Droid does.
In case you’re still planning on buying an Android smartphone and haven’t decided upon one yet we’ll also remind you that most upcoming handsets will sport Android 2.2:
- Motorola Droid is getting Froyo in July
- Motorola Droid X is getting Froyo in August
- Motorola Droid 2 is coming with Froyo on board in August
But phones like the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment will not make the jump to the next Android level.

Dang it!!! My EVO is totally bricked. None of the Sprint stores in my area have new ones to replace it with. I was offered a refurbed EVO but I refused it.
I am quite disappointed. Actually, almost to the point of straight up returning my EVO. I never rooted my EVO. Add all of the apps on it came from the Android Market accept the app for Audible.com. Maybe the Audible.com app was the problem since was not in the Android Market.
I called Sprint customer care. They were helpful as they could be by finding a store with EVOs being shipped in almost daily; but I had hoped that they could ship me one over night or within a few days.
Fortunately, I kept my Palm Pre as backup and the I have a Google Voice number that I usually give out instead of my regular number.
Hopefully, Sprint will come through for those of us that have not rooted or done something funky to their EVOs.
