Google Chrome Passes Apple's Safari In US Browser Market Share

Google Chrome Reaches 8.97% Market Share & Moves Into #3 Overtaking Safari

The browser war has long been dominated by Microsoft’s Internet Explorer. Of course, we still hope to see something overtake Internet Explorer, but in the meantime there is some exciting competition for position number two and three. And it looks like there has recently been a change in number three here in the US, which is also noted as being a first.

Google Chrome has overtaken Apple’s Safari and moved into number three for US based browser market share. And as you likely guessed, Chrome is following behind Internet Explorer and Firefox. These numbers are coming by way of online web analytics company StatCounter and show Chrome at 8.97% with Safari at 8.88%.

As far as the numbers behind the stats, these are coming from analysis of 874 million page views during the week of June 21st through June 27th. And while its hard to deny that Chrome and Safari are separated by a small amount, 8.97% and 8.88%, its still impressive to see Google having risen from 0% in less than two years.

Otherwise, Internet Explorer is still riding high with their 52% market share and Firefox trailing in a respectable second with 28.5%. And as a reminder, these are US based numbers.

If you want to look globally they do change a bit. Based on the same timeline of June 21st through June 27th StatCounter analysis was based on 3.6 million page views and placed Internet Explorer with 53%, Firefox with 31%, Chrome with 9.4% and Safari with just 4%. Its also worth noting that Chrome has been in the number three position globally for quite some time. That said, its nice to see Chrome finally overtake Safari here in the US market.

Personally, even as a long time and regular Mac user I never really liked Safari all that much. In the past I have been a Firefox user, but more recently made the full-time switch to Chrome.
