RIM Trademarks “BlackBerry Drive”
Despite the popularity of the iPhone, the BlackBerry still has a strong and dedicated community. Recently, the BlackBerry faithful spotted RIM issuing a trademark application for something called “BlackBerry Drive”. This has spurred speculation as everybody wonders what it could be.

IntoMobile believes it to be something related to automobiles. They cite RIM’s recent purchase of “QNX”, an embedded technologies company that does automotive systems. They go on to speculate that BB Drive could be a new in-car system that would allow you to use your BlackBerry to remotely start and shut down your car (something necessary for cold-weather residents), as well as adjust the climate controls and radio stations and things.
Ford Sync, Ford’s in-car system, which is powered by Microsoft’s Auto platform, has an extensive developer API system for outside apps. It’s possible that the BlackBerry Drive could be something to interact with Ford Sync, as well as other Microsoft Auto in-car systems.
There’s also the other possibility that’s scarely mentioned. While “Drive” does bring up mental imagines of cars and driving – couldn’t it just be a new BlackBerry? The BlackBerry Drive 9950 or something like that? Seems possible to us – despite not being mentioned by the other pundits.
What would you think about a BlackBerry service that interfaces with your car?
