PSA: iPad Camera Connection Kit Doesn't Work With iPhone 4

iPhone 4 Will Not Pass Go, Will Not Collect USB Port/SD Card Reader With iPad Camera Connection Kit

One of the biggest gripes many users have with the iPad other than the fact that it features no camera whatsoever is the fact that its only port aside from the 3.5mm headset jack is Apple’s proprietary 30-pin connector. This leaves users unable to connect USB enabled peripherals to the device making the iPad less of a netbook/laptop replacement and more of an over sized iPod touch. Luckily, Apple does offer an iPad Camera Connection Kit for $29 that not only gives the iPad a card reader, but also a USB port, originally destined for use only with a digital camera.

Thanks to the Apple hacking community, the iPad Camera Connection Kit has been proven to work with things such as a USB keyboard and mouse with a bit of hacking giving the iPad a bit more functionality but no where near as much as a normal computer with standard USB ports. Well, considering both the iPhone 4 and iPad are powered by Apple’s iOS mobile operating system and both feature similar specs (with the iPhone 4 only slightly on top) many have wondered if the iPad Camera Connection Kit would be able to bless the iPhone 4 with a USB port just as it did with the iPad.

Well, unfortunately for those looking to hook up some USB peripherals to the iPhone 4, the iPad Camera Connection Kit is not compatible with the iPhone 4 and will not give the device a USB port nor a card reader. This is quite a bummer considering both the iPhone 4 and iPad feature the 30-pin connector that should, in theory, give both devices the ability to function properly with the Camera Connection Kit.

iPhone 4 users need not be too discouraged as even if Apple never releases an iPhone 4 Camera Connection Kit or the ability to work with the iPad Camera Connection Kit, the hacking community is sure to step in and give the device full functionality with the kit.

Now all we need to do is play the waiting game.

Did you try it with Bluetooth enabled? There’s some indication that the iPad USB connection uses the bluetooth drivers. Maybe that’s the same on the iPhone?

Any more news on getting the iPad CCK to work with iPhone? Does it work with iOS 4.3? Is there any evidence that points at the CCK working with a jailbroken version of 4.3?
