HTC Quietly Replacing OLED With LCD Screens On Current Models
We already know that HTC is having supply issues with their OLED screens. They’re currently buying them from Samsung, and they’ve already caused delays in a number of phones, mainly the Droid Incredible and the HTC Desire. To fix the problem, HTC is silently swapping out the OLED displays on some current models for LCD displays.

Gizmodo reports that a majority of the phones will still have OLED displays, while a random number of them will get LCD displays. This is being done to help HTC keep up with demand, and you’d be okay to think this is a little shady on HTC’s part.
To their credit, they’re not using some cheap LCD displays. They’re using a high-end LCD panel from Sony, which allegedly is indistinguishable from an OLED panel. HTC also has an exclusive with Sony, and they’ll be the only ones using these LCD panels for a while.
Right now, only the HTC Desire will be getting the LCD screen in place of the OLED screen. HTC is coy has to if customers will be informed as to if their phone carries the OLED screen (as advertised) or if it’s been subbed with an LCD panel.
What do you think? Shady business practice or fair response to demand and supply issues?
