What’s Included In PlayStation Plus’ Features? [Sony Outlines PlayStation Plus Features, Free Games You Don't Own and One Hour Of Free Gaming]
At the official PlayStation blog, the folks at Sony have now fully outlined the features that you’ll get if you chip out the $50 yearly fee for PlayStation Plus. Jack Trenton was oddly coy about the features during Sony’s E3 press event – but now they’ve further detailed everything you’ll get. Are you in?

The first thing you’ll notice is a ever-changing selection of free games. These games will be pulled from things currently on the PSN network, including PSN games, minis as well as PSOne Classics. Once you download them, you’ll be able to keep them, even if the selection changes – but be advised. Despite what a popular tech blog incorrectly reported, if you cancel your PlayStation Plus account – you’ll lose the games.
You’ll also get one free hour trials to anything on PSN. It’s not just a demo – you’ll install a game from PSN and it’ll give you 60 minutes to try it out. Unlike a typical demo version, it’s not limited in anyway (so if you can beat the game in 60 minutes, go for it). After your time is up, you’ll be given the option to purchase the game.
In addition to that, you’ll get access to early demos and betas that other players won’t get. Of course, “beta” is the new console game marketing style of beta test, not like the old days where you would receive a beta copy of a game, it would barely run right, then the developers would mail you and harass you to write a bug report back. While cool, this isn’t a selling feature unless you’re “that guy” who has to be first.
Rounding out the features here, you’ll get discounts on some PSN content. It’s not everything, and the discount will range from 20% to 50%. The final feature is automatic updating. Currently, PSN and the Xbox, if your game requires an update – you’ll be notified when you boot up the game. With PlayStation Plus’ automatic updating, your PS3 will turn itself on and update your games and then shut itself off. Doesn’t seem like much of a feature to me but I’ve seen more than a few people absolutely going nuts over this.
It’s worth noting that all current PSN features, mainly free online gaming, will continue to be free.
Any PS3 owners considering signing up for this? $50/year, $18/3 months.
