BlackBerry Shield Spotted in the Wild; It’s Not a Phone
We have just seen a bunch of pictures of the BlackBerry Bold / Torch 9800 in action, showing that the device is preparing for an AT&T launch, and we have more RIM secrets to share.

The first images of BlackBerry Shield, a new RIM service for its smartphones, have leaked and we’re glad to see RIM busy developing this particular BlackBerry tool. What is Shield? Well, obviously, it’s not a device but a new service that will help protect your data, just like MobileMe does for the iPhone and iPad.
This new application will definitely be what some BlackBerry users have been waiting for a long time. A way to secure data even in case the device gets lost or stolen. But here’s a quick list of features of this upcoming Shield application:
- Remote Device Wipe: Wipes the device and/or memory card remotely
- “Lost & Found” Screen: Displays a message on the home screen if the device is lost or stolen
- Remote Password: Remotely set the password for the device
- Loud Ring: Makes the device ring loudly (even if it’s set on silent) in case the device is lost
- Device Tracking: Track your device using GPS
- Remote Backup: Remotely back up or restore your device data
BlackBerry Shield will be available for free to BlackBerry Internet Service, which is a very good news, isn’t it? But wait, there’s more! Not only is this Shield going to be available on your computer but also on your mobile devices. So if you happen to have an extra BlackBerry smartphone, you’ll be able to take advantage of some of the features above right from it.
Of course, nothing is official just yet so we’ll be waiting for RIM to reveal more details about BlackBerry Shield in the near future.
