First Droid Will Get Froyo Update Before Droid X

Today, everybody was mouth watering over the new Droid X – the phone we’ve known about forever but just first saw officially unveiled today. The Droid X will ship with Android 2.1, and according to Motorola and Verizon – it’ll get the OTA update to Android 2.2 in August. But, a leaked Verizon document shows the first Droid getting the update in July.

The first Motorola Droid has quite following, and still remains popular. Many outlets are selling the phone for free or $20 with a two-year Verizon contract, and it’s getting a ton of new customers. That aside, it may be a bit confusing to see Motorola and Verizon’s teams working to  approve the OTA update for the older phone before the newer phone would get the update.

Of course – it might change. The Droid’s upgrade to 2.1 was rumored, then announced by Motorola, then delayed about 50 times. So, while this Verizon document has the Droid 2.2 upgrade penciled in for “late July”, just be aware that the update may come later, a lot later than that.

If you can’t wait, you could check out CyanogenMod, which should release their modified Android 2.2 update any day now.

Why is Android 2.2 a big deal? It adds full support for Flash 10.1. That’s something you’d want, unless you’re Steve Jobs or a member of the Apple flock.
