Analyst Predicts 1,000,000 iPhone 4′s Sold Today [Long Before iPhone 4 Sales Numbers Are Released, Analyst Predicts 1m as People Queue Up]

It’s already gone on sale in Japan and went on sale in Europe a few hours ago – but some are predicting big things for the iPhone. Bloomberg BusinessWeek is predicting that the iPhone 4 will sell 1 million units today, and cites an analyst who says the phone will have sold 2 million units by the time this quarter ends.

As we reported earlier (see link above), customers lined up in Japan. Major Apple Stores in Tokyo saw lines over 300 people. Employees handed out bottled water and soy chips to those waiting in the early morning Tokyo heat – and when the clock hit 8am and the store opened – music played and confetti shot from the building, much to the crowd’s delight.

In Paris, at the Apple Store in the Louvre, more than 200 lined up. Although specific numbers weren’t reported, long ‘queues’ were reported outside Carphone Warehouses and other UK mobile phone retailers across England.

Here in the United States, we’ve seen people camping and setting up shop outside Apple stores for a few days already. Steve Wozniak stayed overnight at his favorite Apple Store and news outlets, eager for a human interest story, have been interviewing the early line-waiters.

One analyst, Colin Gillis, told BusinessWeek that the iPhone would sell 10 million units this quarter. As the iPhone has sold just over 50 million units in three years, this is would be incredible and probably is wrong.
