Verizon Announces Special Early Upgrade Policy For Motorola Droid X
When new phones come available there are usually plenty of people wishing they were eligible for an upgrade. And that seems like it will be the case with the Droid X — I know I want one. Thankfully though, Verizon is going to make it much easier for people to get the Droid X without having to wait.

Anyway, this news comes by way of the official press release, though it was buried deep at the bottom. Basically, it seems that they are offering customers the option to upgrade early. In fact, if you have an upgrade eligibility date anytime in 2010 you will be able to get a Droid X on July 15th without penalty.
But more interesting is that you will not only be able to get a Droid X, but “any smartphone.” I guess this is one way for Verizon to get more customers on smartphones, which means more data plans for them and in turn more revenue.
In the end though, this sounds like a win-win for both Verizon and Verizon customers. After all, why would you want to wait for a phone like the Droid X. With features like three microphones, Mobile Hotspot, a 4.3 inch 854 x 480 pixel display, 8GB of internal storage and 16GB microSD card included with purchase its hard to not be excited.
Of course, as Chris mentioned, that Mobile Hotspot service does come as a $20 add-on. Its a shame that Verizon is not willing to throw that on as a freebie like they did with the Palm Pre Plus, which by the way gets 5GB instead of the 2GB that the Droid X will get. Then again, Mobile Hotspot was most likely thrown in for free as an attempt to sell more Pre Plus phones, which is something I am sure will not be a problem with the Droid X.

So basically if your eligible for any type of upgrade in 2010 including an early upgrade (every 12 months) then this applies? Or only if your 2 year contract ends in 2010?
@Dannyboy,
The wording in the press release read as;
“current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010,”
Which leads me to believe that it would apply to only those with contracts ending. Still, I would suggest calling, never know what the right person may be able to do for you. That said, I called about my personal account and was told I did not qualify because my contract did not end in 2010.
The way this was presented initially (at least by press) was if you were eligible for upgrade in 2010, you were eligible for the Droid X without waiting.
I didn’t hesitate and went to Best Buy, where I was told “Yes, you are eligible because you can upgrade in November” even though my contract ends in 2011, and they took my $50 for a deposit.
Now the more I read the more it sounds like I’m not eligible. You better believe I’ll raise a good load of sh!t when I get to the store and they try to say I’m not. I’ve got the name of the guy who told me I was eligible, I’ll make sure he’s there when I go in to pick up the phone.
