Apple rolled out iOS 4 (aka iPhone OS 4.0) yesterday and the iPhone Dev Team made sure the new OS gets jailbroken on day one. So in case you happen to have an iPhone 3G or a second-generation iPod touch (2G) that currently runs iOS4 then you’ll be happy to know you can jailbreak them no and install all the apps you want on these devices even if they’re not officially supported by Apple.

There’s no carrier unlock at this time but that’s certainly coming in due time as the iPhone Dev Team has always managed to deliver these unlocking/jailbreaking solutions to all iPhone OS versions.

The current redsn0w version will only let you activate the iPhone 3G as well as jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G. If you happen to own an iPhone 3GS or are getting ready to purchase the iPhone 4 then you should definitely wait until a proper jailbreak version is out there.

The iPhone Dev Team also warns you not to pursue any unofficial redsn0w versions that you’ll find online but rather wait for their “official” tools to be released.

We’re also warning you that jailbreaking and/or unlocking the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad or any other mobile devices could void your warranty and brick the device. We’re definitely not advising you to pursue such tasks if you’re not feeling comfortable using any of the programs released by the Dev Team.

Unlocking and/or jailbreaking your iOS 4 device, while it will let you access all the Cydia apps you may want and even switch mobile operators, is totally your decision to make and we’re definitely not going to support or aide you in this respect.
