iOS4 Making Images Blurry?

Three Hours In, iOS 4 (aka iPhone OS 4.0) May Be Reducing Image Quality Of Synced Images

Did you already download iOS4 on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Despite the new operating system being out for just a few hours, some people are already complaining that it’s reducing the image quality of their pictures.

It’s being alleged that images synced to the iPhone/iPod via iTunes are the ones that are getting “down-sampled” and becoming “blurry”. This comes by way of BGR, who reports that although the new iPhone OS is just a few hours old, they’ve received a “rash” of complaints about this image issue.

Bringing up Android – the open OS actually had something similar happen when they released Android 2.1. Android 2.1 changed the way that images were displayed, going from 24-bit to 16-bit textures – effectively worsening the quality. Of course, Android 2.1 also added 3D effects – so the lower textures were to compensate.

Could something similar be happening? Could Apple be lowering the image quality purposefully, something to do with multi-tasking perhaps?

Anybody seeing their synced pictures on their iPhone look worse?

I JUST completed my download and noticed the same issue. As a photographer, this is NOT OK. I want my picture quality back, Apple!

    2. Susan says:

Absolutely my images are blurry or fuzzy. These are from my laptop albums filled with pix I’ve taken with my digital camera. They are sharp and clear and in no way are the images on my iPhone representative of my original pix.

    3. ryan says:

mine were really low res and blurry. So i
      1. went back in to iTunes
      2. clicked on iPhone
      3. Clicked Photos Tab
      4. un-ticked the Sync Photos box
      5. clicked “don’t remove photos” when prompted
      6. Re ticked Sync Photos.
      7. It synced quickly (about 20 seconds for 537 photos)
Now they’re all back to high res – you’ll still get a momentary optimising images warning, but only quickly.
Worked for me is all I can say.

    4. Grace says:

Same thing happened. Only the pictures that are in the camera roll folder remained crisp, all the images in other folders became fuzzy and blurry.

I have noticed another problem as a mobileme user too. The Apple Mail To Do folder has simply vanished. Cant locate it on me.com or the iPhone under iOS4 anymore. This is getting frustrating.

    5. Grace says:

Btw, I observed something that might have contributed to that. When I did a screen shot with my other iPhone that is still running iOS 3, it comes as a jpg file but when I did it with my iOS 4 iPhone, it comes as a png file.

    6. wezlo says:

A png would actually be MORE crisp than a jpg for a screenshot, as it’s lossless compression.

    7. Christina says:

I noticed after updating my phone today that it would not allow me to send picture in a text message..will this be fixed?

    8. dan says:

yes, same issue here…photo’s are un-viewable they are so bad!

    9. Hieu says:

FYI… Ryan’s fix of unchecking and then checking “sync photos” worked. Thanks Ryan.

    10. Daniel says:

there is a simple solution to getting the photos of our albums back to being crisp and sharp.
You have to back-up your iphone once you have installed iOS 4.
The best thing, is to igve th iphone a fresh start. So turn it off, and then back on.
Then plug it into iTunes, and sync it.
It worked for me, and my images were fixed.

DO this and you are garuanteed to get your images back to a sharp posture.;)

    11. Larch says:

Re-synced just as Ryan described worked fine.

Totally blurry, low res. I reckon it’s a bug.

Re-synched all the photos again and it all were hi res again.

      Cheers

    13. Seth says:

i resynced my photos as described above and that worked fine

    14. Kevin says:

I have the same issue, I lost all my high Res pictures.. they all are los res now .. VERY FRUSTRATING!! I will try and re-sync as described above.

    15. John T says:

Hit sync after you updated the software on the phone. It will re-optimize the phone and update any apps that required updating. Looks like the OS update process neglected the app updates and the photo optimization. Just hit sync again when the OS update is done and it should work out.

I was pissed too when I saw the photos!!!

    16. Renate says:

I had the same problem. My pictures were not on my mac so syncing or restarting the iphone didnt work. I guess i need to get my harddrive and add the pictures all over again, cause syncing with pictures that are on my mac works.. (Although findig that out made all the other pictures dissapear completely *lol*)

I have also recently put 4.0 on my iPhone and yes I have blurry pics. Not cool apple. Where is the quality

Mine was blurry too…I did what Ryan said and they are all back to normal…THANKS Ryan!

SAME PROBLEM! It scared me for a second.
      This solution worked though. THANKS!

Ryan’s solution worked for me as well. Hooray! Thanks Ryan!

    21. micha says:

I have this bad-photo-quailty problem too,
and in the iPod – App I only have one Cover in CoverFlow at a time. So when I click play and turn my iPhone (3Gs) to landscape, Cover Flow comes up but only with the actual Album Cover, no other Covers! And in the track list (click “i” on lower right corner in CoverFlow Mode) there is only the one track, the one which is playing…

And there is no map loaded, when clicking on “places” in the new Photo-App…

I unchecked all music and photos (and videos in advantage too) and sync my phone (deleted them), then I add my music and photos (and videos) again … CoverFlow is back no normal functionality (all Covers were showed) and photo quality like before updating :-)

Re-sync helps for me too. But there is still no map in the Photo-App (under places, btw. wlan is connected and works, so internet is available)

      Regards.

There are features apple forgot to add in before releasing IOS 4.0 multitasking. The _X sign on the top right corner. Now people will start complaining. Haha :) I will just shut and wait.

Yes I have the same problem – sort it out Apple!

    27. Will says:

      Worked for me too! Thx.

    28. Alec Hanson says:

Great solution thanks. Didn’t work first time, but disconnect, rebooted and re-connected and on next sync it has started “Optimising photos for….”

Obviously something missed out of the upgrade process, or Apple mean t for you to have to sync a few times and fiddle with some options to get it to work :-)

    29. Lee n says:

Yeh blurry as but wot you r all saying work for me too. Thanks for the help. Cheers!

    30. Brian says:

My pics were blurry and it wouldnt let me send them in mms i was freakin out thinkin i messed up by downloading ios4 but i did what ryan said and it worked! Thanks Ryan!

    31. BirdieT says:

Yes, I noticed that too! I downloaded OS4 today and went to set a new wallpaper using a photo that I took and the quality is all fuzzy and blurry. Fix the problem!

    32. Bob says:

I see the same thing. Just transferred my library from a PC to a Mac and upgraded to OS4. Transferred photo quality on iPhone horrible. Not the same as before update.

    33. Vicki Shearer says:

I rebooted my iPhone and then re-sync’d to iTunes to get my picture quality back. The only problem is that had select photos from my computer on my iPhone before OS4. Now I can’t find the photos tab in iTunes after downloading the new version of iTunes for the OS4 version of iPhone, so it downloaded all 3000 photos from my computer. Takes up too much space on the iPhone. Any suggestions?

    34. Sherry says:

Ryan gets a Gold Star!!! Way to go Bud!

    35. Stace says:

yeah, the re-syncing worked for me…..got my picture quality back again :-)

All you people saying “I want my quality pics back”, “not happy Apple” etc, simply re-sync by REMOVING them and then re-adding them….

      Simple!

    36. Rick says:

I had almost 5000 photos on my iphone – most all are now blurry. I’m very disappointed with 4.0 or the new iTunes version. Yesterday I downloaded and installed both before trying to upload the os 4.0 to my iPhone and iPod Touch. I tried to resync my photos – but then itunes crashed – I guess it didn’t like the number of photos I had. The same thing happend to both my iPhone and my iPod Touch – that sucks.

I did notice that if the photos were re-added (re-sync) in smaller quanitity the quality returned… So I think the problem is with iTunes and not OS 4.0.

    37. Yannis says:

Absolutely – same problem here. Rather a basic bug for them to miss… Also iPhone got very clunky when having multiple applications running…

    38. exilelrrp says:

Same here with the picture folder blurred!…I just unchecked the photo folder then hit sync…Then go back checked it then hit sync all normal…

    40. JP says:

      All my images look terrible.
Did they really think no one would notice!?

      What an obvious flaw.

Is it too much to ask for them to check these things before going and releasing a massive update? Apple’s reputation of plug and play and ease of use is a bit over rated.

I will try deleting everything and then syncing it back but in my opinion, it is once extra step that I shouldn’t have to waste my time doing.

    41. Bev says:

Ryan – I deleted my photos when they turned our blurry after the update, so I could re-sync. Did not work. Photos were corrupted – some color pixels, but mostly black photos. I deleted again, restarted computer, did hard re-start on my 3gs iphone. Then added one small folder of photos back to re-sync, to insure it would work. Now, it will not bring over any photos at all to my iphone. It just sits there – over an hour and a half. I finally pulled the plug. Anyone else having this issue? Help.

    42. Nic says:

I believe that the issue is not the images are lower res but that the screen is now higher res. Resyncing is bringing your images over to the new phone at higher res, a res that is better suited for the new screen.

    43. Dimetra says:

Ryans suggestion worked for me also. Now, I’m back in love with my ipod! Yay!

    44. Nex says:

      thanks ryan worked for me

    45. Neil says:

Same issue as everyone else trying to resynch as suggested ! Works thanks !!!!

    46. Jay says:

      yep same,
      horrid picture quality.
i wish i could downgrade back to 3.1.1

      Ryan’s method worked for me!
      It does work.

    48. Katie says:

I’m having the same problem with the photos. I took them off & then synced them back on again. It didn’t help. I’ll try what Ryan did. Thanks.

    49. Katie says:

Okay i tried Ryan’s method and some of the pics are still blurry. so i doesnt completely work for me. any other way to fix this?

    50. Graham says:

Ryan’s trick didn’t work for me, but I did something similar which worked (iPhone 4S). I moved the images from the sync folder on my Mac and synced. This removed all the images from the iPhone. Then I put the images back in the folder and synced again. Voila! All images now in the expected quality.
