Motorola ES400 Is Tough and Secure

New Rugged Motorola Smartphone Is Running Windows Mobile 6.5, 600MHz Processor, Headed To Sprint

Rugged gadgets really fascinate me. Maybe it’s because I work from my home and can use whiny regular gadgets. The folks at Motorola just introduced a new Windows Mobile rugged smartphone, and it actually doesn’t look that bad.

As some commentators often inform us here at TFTS, Windows Mobile is the de facto standard in rugged smartphones, despite consumers wishing they would got Android, or some other platform. Well, this phone is running Windows Mobile but it’s actually got some decent hardware that may improve the software experience.

Here are the stats for the Motorola ES400:

  • ARM 600MHz Processor
  • 256MB RAM
  • 1GB ROM
  • 3-inch touchscreen
  • 3.2-megapixel camera
  • GPS, WiFi, Barcode Scaner
  • Windows Embedded Handheld (variant of Windows Mobile 6.5)
  • New Motorola Enterprise UI

While the 600MHz processor may not seem like much in today’s world of 1GHz Android phones and (alleged) 1.2GHz iPhone 4s – it’s actually fairly a lot for a Windows Mobile phone. It’s also got plenty of RAM and a nice touchscreen.

It’s coming to Sprint but it’s not a iDEN Nextel device. It is very clearly stated in the press release that this is a CDMA/EVDO smartphone.

We haven’t reviewed it, but judging by it – it looks like it could be good at what it does. Pricing and a release date weren’t announced.

It is not coming to AT&T? Motorola’s web site says it is can work on both CDMA and GSM. That is a big advantage for Enterprises, but if it is only approved on Sprint it is useless.
