Monster Chess Represents Ultimate Geek Ambition [Calling it Giant Robots Playing Chess Isn't Out of Line--It's Monster Chess]
Geeks out there, pay attention. This is going to go for Ultimate Geek status without a problem in the world–try robotic pieces, controlled via Bluetooth, made entirely from Lego Mindstorm parts (yes, as in off the shelf parts).
The pieces use sensors mounted on their undersides to read a series of symbols (you can see them in the pic above) to tell where to go. Basically, they roll in a certain direction until they reach a symbol, and stop accordingly. There are only so many ways each chess piece can move so the programming part of it at least makes sense, and as its foundation, it uses a computer chess program.
This “chess set” may well be the most expensive in existence, costing fully thirty grand to construct, so if you ever thought that Legos were just for kids, here’s all the proof you need that that’s no longer the case.
