RIM’s BlackBerry Tablet to be Unveiled by Year’s End?

RIM Said to be Testing new BlackTab/BlackPad BlackBerry Tablet; Would We Want It?

This isn’t the first time we focus on RIM’s rumored BlackBerry tablet and the more we talk about it the more real the whole project seems to be. It looks like the Wall Street Journal has taken a particular interest in this Berry tablet and we now have more details for you.

RIM is rumored to be testing the device as we speak and we might see it get official by the end of the year even though it’s still in its early stages of development. We have no idea what the device will be called just yet but there are plenty of alternative names out there: BlackBerry Tablet, BlackTab or BlackPad.

The device is believed to be a “companion” to RIM’s BlackBerry phones but hopefully the BlackPad won’t require us to also purchase a BlackBerry handset in order to take advantage of 3G Internet surfing. The WSJ says that the tablet will “connect to cellular networks via a BlackBerry phone” so it will be interesting to see how RIM plans to pitch the phone to its prospective buyers.

There are not many details on the tablet yet but it’s expected to have a large touchscreen display, a 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of internal memory, Wi-Fi, 3G support via a BlackBerry smartphone and BlackBerry OS 6.0 running under the hood.

The same WSJ article is also saying that RIM is testing a BlackBerry smartphone that comes with both a full touchscreen display and a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard. Of course, we’ve talked about such a device already and we’ll probably see it arrive in stores also by the end of the year.

The WSJ doesn’t have any pictures of these two devices and RIM will certainly not say anything about either of them just yet. So unless the BlackBerry Tablet and/or this new BlackBerry smartphone get lost in a bar or a gym, we’ll have to wait a while until we see the first shots of these new RIM creations.
