Sony: Majority of Our Games Will Be 3D Soon Enough [Sony Predicts Top-Tier PS3 Titles Will Be 3D by 2014]
If you were with us yesteday you’ll know that today 4 brand new titles have hit the Playstation Network with full 3D capabilities in tow. While this is a great step forward for 3D gaming in general, there is still a major lack of games on the market today that feature 3D capabilities. This is most likely due to the currently low adoption rate of 3D displays but as that number increases, so will the number of titles supporting the feature, presumably.

Although the Xbox 360 has the forthcoming Project Natal, which boasts the ability to track motion in 3D, Microsoft’s console currently has no support of 3D content. And, if you’ve ever used a Wii, you know for sure that there is no way Nintendo’s console would be able to render 3D. So, that means Sony’s Playstation 3 is currently the only current generation console that features the ability to render 3D content. But where are our games?
Despite the low adoption rate that I mentioned above, Sony is confident in the 3D technology (much as they were with Blu-ray). Head honco over at Sony’s UK Playstation division, Ray Maquire, even recently went on record as saying that most of the forthcoming first person shooters from Sony will be developed with 3D in mind.
Furthermore, Maquire expects that not only will game studios follow suit but he believes that by 2014, most of the PS3′s hard hitting titles (Uncharted 3?) will be made in 3D.
Now, until 3D technology actually makes its way into the homes of millions and 3D PS3 games follow close behind, there’s no telling if home 3D displays are actually a viable alternative to your normal run-of-the-mill HDTVs. I’ve used a 3DTV and was pretty much blown away by the experience but I’ve yet to play any sort of video game in 3D. Hopefully that all changes very soon.
