Motorola Droid Still Selling Strong; Company to Launch Up to Four Video-Conference Capable Handsets Soon (Droid 2 Too?) [Motorola Still Talks Droid, Probably Didn’t Hear About the HTC EVO 4G Yet]

The Motorola Droid was a huge hit phone for both Motorola and Google’s Android platform. Until the HTC Droid Incredible and HTC EVO 4G came along, the Droid was probably the best Android handset available in the USA and worldwide as the Google Nexus One never became the hit handset Google wanted it to be.

But now, more than six months later, Motorola is still talking Droid when it should focus on the future Droid 2 and 3. Apple has announced the iPhone 4 just a few days ago and the Droid, although still a very dependable handset is probably not going to be able to fight against the iPhone 4.

Moreover we already have hotter Android handsets out there. Verizon has started selling the HTC Droid Incredible just a short while ago while Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G has hit stores last weekend. These are two very interesting iPhone alternatives and they also happen to be tough Motorola Droid adversaries.

In other words, while settle for the Droid when you could get a Droid Incredible or EVO 4G?

Motorola’s CEO, Sanjay Jha said that “(Droid) sales are going extremely well. If I could build more I’d sell more.” It looks like Motorola can’t deal with the Droid demand as some components, we don’t know which ones, are in short supply. But is that demand that big for the Droid at this point in time?

Motorola should be building new, better, Android devices and that’s what it is probably doing right now. Moto’s CEO also said that the company will make two to four phones with front-facing cameras that will be ready for video conferencing by the end of the year. Since when did front-facing cameras become such a must-have feature? Sure we complained the iPhone lacked one, but not because we really wanted one but mainly because other handsets had one.

It’s not like Motorola, or any other manufacturer, will win the battle against the iPhone with front-facing cameras. Is it just me or front-facing cameras aren’t really a decisive factor when choosing your next smartphone?
