AT&T Rumor: You May Be Able To Purchase An Unlimited Data Plan For Your iPad 3G Without Having An iPad

AT&T Considers Allowing Customers To Sign Up For Unlimited iPad Data Without An iPad

By now I am sure most anyone reading this has heard AT&T killed off the unlimited data option for the iPad. That said, as a brief recap, beginning on June 7th AT&T will no longer offer the $29.99 unlimited data plan for the iPad and instead offer a $24.99 2GB plan and $14.99 250MB plan. This is where the latest rumor, which is both crazy and wonderful at the same time comes into play.

Basically, there are lots of Apple Stores that do not have the iPad 3G in stock. Not to mention trying to order one from the Apple Store online is not going to allow enough time for delivery either. And with the current availability there are plenty of people who would like to make a purchase so they can sign up for an unlimited data plan for the iPad and be grandfathered in.

Well, as of now you cannot sign up for the data plan without having an iPad in hand because its all done on the device. That said, its being reporting on the NYT Bits blog that AT&T are discussing options that would allow those who purchased an iPad and just do not have it yet to sign up for the data plan before June 6th is over.

Sadly though, as of now (just after 12 noon eastern on Friday afternoon) AT&T has still yet to make a decision regarding this matter and so far have made the official statement of;

“We are looking into this situation and how we can accommodate these customers.”

And until they offer up a decision, whether good or bad, users currently have until the end of the day on June 6th to sign up or forever be limited to a 2GB data plan.

Finally, while 2GB does sound low, I am in the camp that believes most people will never even use that much. Then again, I do not always practice what I preach because I am happy that I already have my unlimited data plan set up on my iPad and have no plans to cancel anytime soon. For me, its not about using the data, but would much rather pay the extra $5 per month and just have the privilege of not having to worry.
