T-Mobile Officially Launches the myTouch 3G Slide

Android 2.1 Touting T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide Makes its Official Debut for $179.99 With 2-Year Contract

Back on the 24th of May we let you know that T-Mobile was set to officially launch the myTouch 3G Slide on June 2nd. Today, the wireless carrier has delivered on that promise, officially releasing the myTouch 3G Slide for $179.99 on a 2-year contract when you sign up for their Even More plan. Alternatively, they have put the phone up for sale at $429.99 without a contract, also with the Even More plan or financed for $21.50 per month for 20 months.

If you’re not familiar with this device, it is the spiritaual successor to the T-Mobile myTouch 3G (also known as the HTC Magic) which made its debut on the carrier in July of 2009. When the myTouch 3G first hit retailers, it came with Android 1.6 in tow, a much earlier version of Google’s mobile operating system.

Now that the year is 2010, and Android has evolved quite a bit, the myTouch 3G Slide will ship with Android 2.1 which means you will get access to a whole plethora of new features including the highly sought after Google Maps Navigation turn-by-turn GPS software.

Hardware wise the myTouch 3G Slide doesn’t amaze, but it doesn’t dissappoint either. Obviously, considering its monicker, the myTouch 3G Slide will feature a full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard making it a great device for those who doesn’t want to sacrifice a physical keyboard but still want to get down on Android. Additionally, T-Mobile is throwing in the emerging touchscreen typing method Swype for incredibly fast text entry.

Other specs include a 3.4-inch capactiive touchscreen display, a 600 Mhz Qualcomm processor, 512MB or RAM/ROM, a 5.0 megapixel camera with LED flash and auto focus, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, Triband UMTS and HSDPA/HSUPA. Storage wise you’re looking at 512MB of flash memory in addition to a microSD slot good for up to 32GB of additional storage.

Aesthetically, the myTouch 3G Slide will appear to a broad market as it currently comes in 3 different colors; white, black and red.

I think anyone who leaps into a new 2 year contract with T-Mobile is setting themselves up for much disappointment.

The phone is nearly outdated upon its release, to wit:

The phone has a 600Mhz processor, current phones utilizing Android latest OS are running on a 1.0Ghz processor.

The phones video resolution is outdated, same story here as other phones already have upgraded to the newest technology.

512K of Ram is being outdone by some existing phones and plenty more will appear within the next few months using 1GB, same as the Nexus One by Google which was released some time ago.

As fast as this new technology is developing, the life expectancy for the Slide is about 3-6 months before it becomes agrivating that your phone doesn’t run Android 2.1 effectively as other phones. Also who knows when T-Mobile will get the newest version of Android 2.1 or FroYo. T-Mobile will not comment about Google’s commitment to push the latest update, furthermore T-Mobile will not confirm any longer that the updates will be provided OTA or Over The Air, a promise committed to G1 users in 2008.

In fact T-Mobile’s European counterparts have already replaced every customers G1 with a new device for free because of its either lack of capability with the phone or that is gonna be as slow as mollasis. T-Mobile on the other hand has done absolutely nothing for the “Beta-Testers” or first users of the Android basesd HTC phone.

I’ve been with T-Mobile since 2002, while the coverage has been great, dealing with T-Mobile customer care has been a nightmare at best.
