Nintendo DS Family Of Products Getting Price Cut

Japan, UK Getting Price Drop On All DS Systems, No Love For North America

Had your eye on one of the Nintendo DS systems? You may be in luck, as Nintendo is cutting the prices of the systems, if you live in the right country. All DS handhelds (DSi, DSi XL and DS Lite) in Japan are getting the price cut – that’s official, it was confirmed by Nintendo. Now, trade magazine MCV is reporting that Nintendo UK will follow suit by cutting prices in England of the DS handhelds.

MCV reports that Nintendo doesn’t like to strictly control the retail prices of their products (like Apple uh, some companies I hear). Instead of lowering the MSRP on these products, they’ll just be cutting the invoice price (or trade price, as I hear it’s called in the UK) of the handhelds, so that it costs less for the retailers to buy them.

It will be the retailer’s decision if they’ll drop their prices, but expect them all to do so once the invoice price drops. MCV expects the price of the DSi to drop from £150 ($219) to £120 ($175). Not a bad price drop if you ask me.

Is America out of luck? Gaming blog Joystiq asked Nintendo of America who said, “We have nothing to announce on this topic at this time.” Maybe a price drop announced at E3 in two weeks? That is primarily an American gaming trade show (as opposed to Games Convention in Germany or the Tokyo Game Show). We’ll have to wait and see.
