Sony PSP Coming To Airliners [UK-based Travel Entertainment Company Bringing PSPs To Airliners For In-Flight Entertainment]

Have you ever been at 30,000 feet in a jet airliner and suddenly desired a Sony PSP? You may soon be in luck. UK-based travel entertainment firm IFE Services has announced that they’ll now be offering airlines the options of installing PSPs into the back of seats for passenger enjoyment.

IFE Services is working with Sony Computer Entertainment’s American branch on this. The PSPs they’re using will be “fully certified for use in-flight” and will provide movies, TV shows and games to passengers. The PSPs can be branded with the airlines logo, too. No idea on how all this media will be stored on the handhelds. One assumes that they’d almost have to be PSPgo’s so that all the content can be stored digitally.

The PSPs used in-flight will have extended battery life so they can last during extra-long flights. IFE Services will also be offering employee training on how to work the PSPs, too. Despite any negative opinions you may have – this PSP system is preferable (in my opinion) than some pay-per-play PC-based in-flight entertainment system.

Mark Hogg, CEO of IFE Systems, says in the press release:

We’re delighted to be able to bring the PSP system to the airline industry. As a veteran provider of in-flight entertainment, we know that many airline passengers are interested in playing full-scale games with impressive graphics, which the PSP delivers. With up to 11 hours of battery life and full aircraft certification, our view is that this has been long awaited by the airline industry and the passengers they fly.

IFE has signed agreements to have the PSPs installed on six airlines, and they’re currently in talks to have them on several more. Gaming blog Joystiq is reporting that South African Airlines will be one of the ones with the PSP in-flight gaming system.

I know many of our readers have said that iPhone gaming is better than PSP/DS gaming. So what would you rather have in-flight, an iPhone in airplane mode or a PSPgo with a spattering of games and movies?
