Android 2.2 Currently On The Nexus One Isn’t Official [Google Confirms In E-Mail That Current Froyo Nexus One Users Still Will Get Another Update]

A few weeks ago, members of the press who received advance Nexus Ones before the general release of the phone started receiving OTA updates that updated the phone to Android 2.2 “Froyo”. Many commoners in the Android community wanted this upgrade, and figured out a way to update the phone to Android 2.2 early. Turns out, that wasn’t the official release.

A member of the xda-developers forum e-mailed Google tech support, regarding the Android 2.2 update. He asked about what would happen when Google sent out the OTA update to all the phones, and if updating the phone early would have any effect on their warranty. Here’s what Google said:

Hi,

The answer is yes and no, respectively. When 2.2 (Froyo) is sent via OTA, everybody will get it, including those who have already manually updated to Froyo. No, your warranty is not voided by manually updating to Froyo. But we do recommend waiting for the OTA if you’re still on 2.1 / Eclair.

Cheers,

Ben

No word on why they would bother wasting the mobile bandwidth in sending the update twice if the phone already had it. That leads us to speculate that there will be some differences between the flavor of Android 2.2 that’s out there now and the verison that will be sent via the OTA.

But journalists like TechCrunch’s MG Siegler received this early Android 2.2 on their Nexus One via an OTA update. So, Google felt confident about the update enough to sent it to press types who can influence a lot of people. Sort of a strange situation here.

So, feel free to install Android 2.2 on your Nexus One. Or don’t, because Google doesn’t recommend it.
