Wired Magazine App For iPad Sells An Impressive 24,000+ Copies In The First 24 Hours

Wired Launches Digital Edition Magazine For The iPad, Sells Over 24,000 Copies In A Day Despite $5 Price Tag

Yesterday brought the release of the Wired Magazine app for the iPad, which for those that may have missed it, is a digital version of the June 2010 issue. A few things to keep in mind, that app/issue comes as a 527MB download and will set you back $4.99.

In other words, its a pretty hefty download, especially for those with the 16GB iPad and if you consider purchasing a complete year of issues, that $4.99 will add up to a hefty $59.88 per year. Granted there are lots of features in the app. First of all you have the stories, which as many know, Wired is often a great read. But in addition to the stories there is also a mix of other media such as audio and video. For example a link from the cover takes you to an exclusive Toy Story 3 trailer. Personally, I shudder at thinking what I could pay over the course of a year, but still feel the $4.99 price tag was fair.

That said, it seems there were plenty of others that were at least willing to take the chance with a purchase. According to John C. Abell, the Wired Magazine app was downloaded 24,000 times.

“Whoa. 24,000 copies of @Wired Magazine’s iPad edition sold in the first 24 hours.”

Of course, that would lead one to agree that is an impressive number. In fact, according to some math that was provided by electronista, that makes for “$83,832 in one day after Apple collected its royalties.” Not bad.

But you still have to wonder, how many of those 24,000 will ever buy another issue. Well, one Twitter user Samer Farha posed the question;

“@johncabell it’ll be interesting to see the monthly numbers vs next month, as well as vs print edition.”

With that, John obviously cannot answer, but he was quick to offer a tease stating that;

“@samerfarha Also, you ain’t seen nothing yet. :)”

I guess that would mean I will be purchasing the July issue as well, but then again, I had already planned to after starting the June issue yesterday. If anything, I want more magazines like Wired on the iPad.
