Rumor: NVIDIA Showing Dual-Core GTX 490 To Partners [Website Reporting That NVIDIA Is Showing Dual-Core GeForce GTX 490 To Partners]
A website is reporting that NVIDIA is showing off specs for their dual-core graphics card which would challenge the reigning “fastest” graphics card, the Radeon HD 5970. The GeForce GTX 490, as it’s allegedly being called, is purported to be a dual-GF100 card that’ll use a lot of power.

KitGuru is reporting that they’ve heard that NVIDIA is planning to show a prototype of the card to manufacturing partners at the Computex show in Taiwan. As with any rumor of this nature, take it with a grain of salt. KitGuru continues, saying that the GTX 490 will be basically a dual GTX 470.
This seems pretty unlikely, as the GF100 core draws enough watts to power a small village, and NVIDIA’s track record with this sort of dual card usually shows them waiting for a mainstream or mobile core. The rumored GF104 would be perfect for this.
At any rate, they’re reporting that the GTX 470 will double up for the GTX 490. They’re saying that the GTX 490 will have staggering power demands to the tune of 375w. The GTX 470 draws about 215w, so if that number is correct, it would involve one (or both) of the cores being down-clocked.
Of course, even if this rumor is false, we know a $600+ super dual-core card is coming from NVIDIA. The real question is what will AMD/ATI do to counter this dual-Fermi card when it comes out.
Per usual – NVIDIA doesn’t comment on unannounced products.
