It’s almost official, folks, the iPhone 3G 8GB is going to be discontinued. AT&T is already said to have a limited stock of iPhone 3G 8GB left and Apple is not going to replenish them in the future. The device is still present on Apple’s online store but that doesn’t mean you can select it at this time. In fact the select button is gone and the iPhone 3G 8GB model is just posing for the fans.

Should the iPhone 3G 8GB depart us or should Apple still hang on to it? The new iPhone OS 4.0 demoed back in April comes with some various hot features with multitasking probably being the flagship “tentpole” of the new mobile platform version. But Steve Jobs did mention that some devices, including the iPhone 3G, will not be able to take advantage of multitasking as they don’t have the resources to pull off such features. So why keep around a device that’s not going to offer customers support for Apple’s latest software features?

On the other hand the iPhone 3G 8GB was the cheapest iPhone available in the USA and worldwide and it’s definitely a handset worth buying if you’re just getting acquainted to Apple’s mobile universe or if you don’t want to invest that much money in a new iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4G.

With the iPhone 3G gone you can expect the iPhone 3GS 16GB to be sold at just $99 with a new AT&T contract in the USA. After all Walmart is already selling it for $97 so Steve Jobs will probably announce a similar pricing scheme in the near future.

Those of you that will still want to buy iPhone 3G handsets, both 8GB and 16GB versions, will have to remember that a lot of AT&T customers will end their two-year contract that came with the iPhone 3G this summer. Some of them are very likely to upgrade to the iPhone 4G and will want to sell their old iPhone 3G units. So keep your eyes open as your next iPhone 3G is right around the corner and it will probably be available at a bargain off-contract price!
