iPad Wins? No Color Kindle Coming Soon Says Jeff Bezos

Amazon’s Color Kindle Not Happening Just Yet As Color E-Ink Is Not Ready for Print

The day the iPad was announced, back in January, we all expected that Amazon will start working on a color Kindle and launch such a product in the near future in order to match Apple’s tablet and bring more features to its flagship device.

Months later, the iPad is a best sellers no matter what version we’re talking about and Apple has already sold over one million units in the USA with worldwide availability kicking off on May 28. Nevertheless, Amazon doesn’t have a color Kindle to show us and the best thing you can expect from the device for now is a firmware update to version 2.5.

And it looks like it’s Amazon’s own CEO ready to deliver the bad news to its customers. The color Kindle is already available in labs but it’s definitely nowhere near where we’d want it to be. The development of color E-Ink will still take a while and by then we’re probably be more likely to see the next-gen iPad arrive than to see a color Kindle hit Amazon stores.

Jeff Bezos was giving a speech to Amazon’s shareholders at a meeting in Seattle when he mentioned the fact that color Kindle prototypes are “not ready for prime production.” We don’t have any idea when the color Kindle will go to production let alone be ready for sales.

Does that mean that the iPad won the battle with the Kindle? Well it definitely looks that way. By the end of the year the iPad will surpass all Kindle sales, and Amazon has been selling them for a few years already.

In terms of functionality the iPad also surpasses the Kindle as it can offer access to lots of other content sources. But that doesn’t mean the iPad has won the battle against all upcoming tablets, as more tablets should get official in the following year.

For those of you looking for just a simple eBook reader, the Kindle is still a great device to purchase. But is it worth the money considering what tablets can also do for you?

I have a kindle and I would not want it in color or back lite. I have a hard time reading on my computer or my laptop. I can’t seem to get into what I’m reading either. I don’t think that a book reader should be a multi-purpose gadget.
