Survey: 60% Of Facebook Users Considered Quitting Over Privacy Concerns

Survey Finds That Facebook Users Are More Worried About Privacy Than First Though, 24% Really Don't Care

Facebook has become mega-popular and attracts users from all over the world, but recent bad press regarding some users’ private information and what Facebook does with has got a lot of people (both celebrities and commoners) talking about deleting their Facebook account. An unscientific study finds that a whopping 60% of Facebook users at least considered leaving the popular online service.

The folks at Sophos, an internet security firm, conducted an online poll asking Facebook users if they had considered quitting the online service. With a sample size of over 1500 users, they found that a  majority of them (60%) had considered quitting Facebook. Here’s what their survey found.

Do you think you will quit Facebook over privacy concerns?

  • Highly likely that I will – 30%
  • Possibly – 30%
  • I already have – 16%
  • No – 12%
  • I don’t think it’s likely – 12%

Keep in mind that this poll was conducted on the Sophos blog, so even though it got a large sample size, it’s still an audience that predisposed to security issues. Facebook has gotten itself in a proverbial world of trouble with users after changes in its policy now make a large amount of content available to any public user.

Several notable members of the digerati have very publicly deleted their Facebook accounts. A Facebook group is promoting May 31st as “Quit Facebook Day”, so we’ll see then if any notable portion of Facebook’s 400 million bail on the online service then.
