Insiders Say Nokia-Yahoo Partnering On Smartphones [Yahoo Apps To Come Standard On Nokia Phones, Following Today's Announcement, Say Insiders]

Yahoo arranged to have a little press conference today (Friday) in New York City. While the invitation only said it related to an “announcement about providing global consumers with rich online and mobile experiences,” AllThingsD has discovered that the announcement really has to do with Nokia and Yahoo partnering together for smartphones.

Yahoo Nokia Logo

The partnership between Nokia and Yahoo is being called “Project Nike”, not referring to the sneaker company or the US missile program, but instead the Greek goddess of victory. Sort of a daring name, considering the whole thing could be a flop, but alas.

The partnership will see Yahoo search, email and other apps become standard on Nokia devices. Not just Nokia smartphones, but all of their phones. There even was talk of Yahoo following in Google’s footsteps with a Yahoo-branded phone, made by Nokia, but (probably for the better), it looks like that isn’t going to be apart of the deal.

According to AllThingsD, this is another move by Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz to present Yahoo as this hip, cutting edge company. Yahoo doesn’t have a mobile OS of their own (unlike Google and Microsoft) and is probably losing out on the mobile space, which is growing in importance by leaps and bounds all the time.

Nokia, likewise, is the world’s #1 phone manufacturer, but they have struggled in smartphones (although that upcoming Nokia N8 looks really good).

Stay tuned to the Yahoo-Nokia announcement to see if AllThingD’s information is accurate.

How do you feel about a Yahoo-Nokia partnership? Good for them? Bad for them?
