Samsung Says OLED Shortage Will Continue as Demand Does The Same [As OLED Demand Increases, Samsung is Having a Hard Time Keeping Them in Stock]

Just as any other technology, displays continue to improve; way back the hype was over color television sets as opposed to black and white then it was flat screens sets as opposed to curved ones, then HD flat panels and so on and so on. Recently, a lot of press has been given to two advanced display technologies in particular; 3D and OLED. 3D technology is obvious and self explanatory but if you’re not familiar with it, OLED can be a bit confusing.

Organic light emitting diodes, or OLED for short, can be used for a wide array of applications including providing illumination in place of your standard light bulb or in displays for things like televisions, computer monitors or even mobile devices. Recently a lot of manufacturers have decided to go to OLED route with their devices such as the Droid Incredible, Nexus One and the Zune HD due to their vibrant colors and low battery consumption.

The general population is taking well to these new advanced screens as there has been a known shortage. Samsung in particular is one of the premiere manufactueres of these OLED displays with their products appearing in devices such as the above mentioned Droid Incredible. In the past, Verizon has gone on record as saying that the reason the Droid Incredible has not sold to its maximum potential was because of a shortage of components, most notably the OLED displays, from Samsung.

Well, Samsung has come back and said that as the demand for these new OLED displays continues to rise (which is has for some time now) the shortage for the displays will continue. Luckily, not too long ago Samsung announced that they would be investing $2.15 billion into manufacturing these displays which should go into effect through 2012. However, if you’re hoping to get a device with an OLED screen, you better either do so hastily or risk having to wait until stock is replenished.
