HTC Android 2.2 Froyo Update Coming to HTC EVO 4G, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC Desire, myTouch Slide & Others in 2010
Android Froyo came in full glory today and what an impressive mobile platform it is. I’ve always admired Google for their stubbornness of making it in the mobile business, although that was a given since they are taking over the world as we speak, but this update is really a whole different story. If you thought Android 2.1 was hot, wait till you see this new upgrade in action.

But the main problem with Google’s open mobile platform is its fragmentation. There are plenty of handsets out there that only run Android 1.5 and 1.6 and that’s not something customers like. Unfortunately it’s not up to Google to roll out these updates but up to manufacturers and carriers alike and we definitely understand how some of them would love to have customers buy the new devices instead of asking for upgrades to the newest Android version.
Some smartphone makers, like HTC, will apparently offer Android 2.2 Froyo updates to all the handsets launched in 2010. That list includes the HTC EVO 4G, the HTC Droid Incredible, the HTC Desire or the myTouch Slide. These are all hot phones that run Android 2.1 but they definitely deserve the upgrade. We’re also confident that the Google Nexus One will also be blessed with some Froyo flavor although we have no time frames for any of these phones:
[...] if your phone was launched this year, we will most likely offer an upgrade for it to the Froyo version. This includes popular models like the Desire and Droid Incredible as well as hotly anticipated phones like the Evo 4G, MyTouch slide and upcoming models. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo. We expect to release all updates in the second half of this year but can’t be more specific yet.
Let’s just hope that carriers will work closely to HTC to offer the Froyo update as fast as possible. Hear that Sprint?
And while we’re at it, maybe Sony Ericsson, who also has a hot Android handset, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, will decide to offer Android 2.2 to its customers this year. Unfortunately last time we checked Android 2.1 is coming to the X10 only in Q4 2010.

Ironically, I’m waiting to get an Android handset that will (a) be upgraded, for every Android release that the hardware can support, within a reasonable timeframe (30 days or less from the official Android release) and (b) is able to run on the Sprint network.
(I’m currently on a month-to-month with Verizon and a 3 year old RAZR, but Verizon locked down my RAZR, so I’m not going to stay with them. And the Sprint network seems to be the best network in my area.)
