Google Reveals Android Usage Stats At Google I/O 2010 Day 2 Keynote

Google States They Are Doing 100,000 Android Phone Activations Per Day With 60 Compatible Devices In 48 Countries

Day 2 of the 2010 Google I/O conference is now underway and we have already learned some interesting stats as related to Android. Of course, we are still expecting more information on Android 2.2 and possibly Google TV, but in the meantime, lets focus on the numbers behind Android.

As of this morning the Android stats are coming courtesy of Vic Gundotra, who reminded everyone that Android was the second best selling smartphone (behind RIM) during this past quarter and that according to AdMob — Android was number one in terms of web and app use on smartphones.

Of course, that all sounds great, but once you hear some of these other numbers those previous statements just seem to make total sense.

  • Google is currently activating over 100,000 Android phones per day.
  • There are now over 50,000 available apps.
  • There are about 180,000 developers.

Additionally, there are now more than 60 compatible Android devices that are being made from 21 OEMs in 48 countries and on 59 carriers.

Another little tidbit was that Google originally launched Maps Navigation six months ago, and since then they have helped users to navigate more than 1 billion miles.

Touching back on that 100,000 per day number for a moment. This sounds like a pretty impressive number just as it stands, however when you take the previous numbers into consideration it sort of sounds even better. For example, during Google I/O 2009 they were touting 30,000 activations per day. Not to mention, Google was still at 60,000 in February.

Given the 70,000 per day increase in just one year, I can only imagine where they will be during this time next year. Maybe somewhere in the range of 250,000 to 300,000 per day. Of course, that is just a quick guess on my part, but at the rate they are moving now I would not be surprised to see that, or more get announced during Google I/O 2011.
