Google Releases Android 2.2 SDK to Developers

If you’re scratching your head wondering why there are so many Google announcements today it’s because their yearly I/O conference is underway. The latest news to come out of the conference is that the Android 2.2 SDK is now available for developers to download.

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that Android 2.2 just got officially announced today so it’s no surprise that Google would also release the SDK thus allowing developers to prepare for the mobile operating system’s public release.

With the recent boom in Android marketshare and the climibing number of apps made available on the Android Marketplace, developers are sure to be flocking to the version 2.2 SDK and with Good reason. With Android 2.2 comes a whole slew of new features that developers will be able to utilize to their fullest extent.

Like we mentioned before, Android 2.2 is between 2 and 5 times faster than previous versions of Android so the new SDK is sure to include a ton of tools for application optimization ensuring all apps developed for the platform are running at optimal speed. Additionally, there is the business aspect of the operating system that developers are sure to congregate around as 2.2 brings a ton of new Enterprising features for deeper integration with popular business services like Microsoft Exchange.

Another feature that will prove useful to developers is the ability to tether your Android powered devices. While Google will allow for WiFi tethering straight out of the box, app developers have been known to work magic with such features and this should be no different.

If Android 2.2 delivers on all of its promises, the forthcoming iPhone OS 4 from Apple will surely be getting a run for its money. However, with new features like multi tasking and tethering just over the horizon for the iPhone, app developers are going to have to put a lot of blood sweat and tears into their apps to give Android the spotlight it deserves.
