Google I/O: No Android Tablet Made Official [Google Announces Android 2.2 Froyo, Google TV, but No Verizon-Google Android Tablet]

Although we’re desperately in need for a true iPad competitor, just as we were looking for iPhone alternatives in the past, Google didn’t announce such a device during its second Google I/O keynote. If you have been following us today you already know that Android 2.2 Froyo is going to be a remarkable mobile platform that will compete very well with iPhone OS 4.0.

Furthermore Google is ready to turn our regular TVs, into powerful computers that will be able to deliver all our favorite shows and all that show-related content, whether from TV or the web to our living rooms. The Mountain View-based company has partnered up with Sony, Logitech, Best Buy, Adobe and Intel to make it all happen but, nonetheless, Google TV will probably not be as impressive a product as an Android tablet coming from Verizon soon.

Sure the Android tablet rumor is not new, but not that old either. That means it might be a while until some Google partners actually build the first Android tablet that can be showcased during such an event like Google I/O.

Verizon didn’t release any news about such a product either, a product that will probably be sold in Verizon stores later down the road. Or was it all a PR scam in order to put pressure on Cupertino to launch the CDMA iPhone as fast as possible? Time will tell!

But even if the Android tablet hasn’t arrived yet, it will surely be unveiled in the near future no matter if Verizon will sell it or not. Android 2.2 Froyo looks like a much better Android platform and I wouldn’t mind having it installed on a tablet soon. Besides all those new features we’ve seen today and which could fit very well with a tablet environment, Android 2.2 brings Flash support which will be a key factor for some buyers that might ignore the iPad in favor of the yet unnamed Android tablet.

So what do you say, folks? Are you excited, or disappointed about the Android tablet missing in action?

It really is unbelievable that no one has capitalized on this tablet fever…there isn’t even a competitor yet, and they are selling like hot cakes. If Google came out with a tablet that supported Flash today, they’d make a killing. I’m hoping it wasn’t just a PR scam

It shouldn’t be surprising no tablets are ready — everyone was down on the idea until Apple showed it could be successful.

As for Flash on “Froyo,” I haven’t seen a convincing demo yet (the Engadget report made it sound not so good). I have a feeling by the time it gets here, there will be hype about it, but in a few months consumers won’t even notice. Flash is already dying on desktops and it will be stillborn on mobile.
