Google I/O: Google Announces & Previews The Chrome Web Store

Google Unveils App Store For the Web, Dubbed The Chrome Web Store]

Google I/O 2010 has barely kicked off and we are already seeing some interesting goodies come. One of the more recent was the announcement of the Chrome Web Store, which will be an app store for the web.

This one sounds pretty interesting, and given the selection of apps that will be available I look forward to seeing it go live. First and foremost, we are still learning the details, so this is likely to be a continued discussion here.

That said, the Chrome Web Store will include both paid and free apps as well as a wide variety of everything from productivity apps such as Wave, social apps such as TweetDeck and even the popular iPhone/iPad game Plants vs.Zombies. In short, it seems as if the Chrome Web Store will have something for just about everyone.

Details as far as making a purchase have not been fully detailed as of yet, though its likely you need to make any purchase while logged into your Google account, and presumably using Google Checkout. It would be nice to see an option for PayPal or other payment methods, however Google Checkout should work well enough for most.

As for those games, the Plants vs. Zombies will be running in Flash and another game that was mentioned is Lego Star Wars which will take advantage of HTML5. Another app that will take advantage of HTML5 is TweetDeck.

Other details include that the Chrome Web Store will have support for over 40 languages and should be available in the Chrome Dev Channel “soon.”

Finally, some of the other apps that will be available include Pandora, Digg, Bejeweled 2, LinkedIn, Scrabble, NPR and most likely many many more. So far the pricing for most have not been announced or even revealed. Of course, at least one image that has been spotted shows an app called Dark Room which is priced at $4.99.

In the end, this seems like it could make the Chrome browser a much more effective way of wasting time on the web.
