How To Manually Update Your Verizon Droid Eris To Android 2.1
As we have already seen, Verizon has begun rolling out the Android 2.1 update for Droid Eris users. That sounds good, but the bad news is that the roll out is not going as fast as many have hoped for. I have heard from several Eris owners and have confirmed the 2.1 is out, but on a personal level I have been checking and hoping to see the update notification and its still not here. Well forget waiting, I am going forward with a manual update to Android 2.1 and you can follow along.

The process is pretty painless, though you will want to read the directions carefully and maybe two or three times before you begin, you know, just to be sure you did not miss anything. And to offer the obligatory ‘cover my backside’ warning — proceed with caution and do not blame me if something goes wrong.
With that out of the way, lets begin…
- Click here and download this file. Just as a reference, its labeled as “OTA_Desire_C_Verizon_WWE_2.36.605.1_1.17.605.1_release_0420.79112f65″ and its a ZIP file.
- Once downloaded, rename the file. I changed mine to “update.zip” but feel free to be a little more creative.
- Move the update.zip file to the microSD card in your Eris, but make sure not to put it in a folder.
- Turn your phone off and then prepare to restart it and enter the bootloader.
- Turn your phone on, but turn it on while hitting the Volume Down button and the Power button at the same time.
- Once the phone is on, scroll down to Recovery and then press the Power button. This will reboot your phone and show an exclamation point.
- Once there, press the Power button and the Volume Up button at the same time. This will bring up a menu and you can choose the option for “Apply sdcard:update.zip”. **NOTE** If this does not work, then try holding the Power Button and Home Button. That worked for me, and no you will not have the haptic feedback on the Home button, but press it anyway.
- From here it will take some time to run through its process. It will take some time, and you need some patience.
Anyway, after you have spent all of your patience waiting for your Eris to come back to life, you should be running Android 2.1. With that, enjoy all of the goodies that come along with it.
