PSP 2 Coming This Year From Sony?
English gaming trade magazine MCV is hinting that we may be getting a new PSP announcement this year. While public excitement for the PSP has been dead for a few years now, some recent marketing decisions by publishers leads MCV to believe that we could be seeing a new PSP announced this year at E3.

MCV reports than a British game publisher is increasing their spending on marketing dollars for PSP products set for Q4 2010. What’s interesting about this is that the PSP (and the PSPgo) is believed to do being poorly in the Western world (despite having some legitimately awesome features). Sony’s released sales numbers have been modest and they’ve been quiet about the PSPgo’s sales numbers (which doesn’t bode well).
Another publisher told MCV that they were waiting for a specific announcement from Sony regarding the future of the PSP platform before they announced their future plans. All of this is leading to speculation that Sony will make a big announcement at E3. A “PSP 2″ has been rumored. It could be another SKU, like the PSPgo or DSi XL.
With the Nintendo 3DS coming out next year (or this year, depending if you believe Nintendo’s press release or rumors), it could be that Sony is looking to release a new PSP to compete with the 3D-capable handheld. Remember that the first DS and PSP came out within 10 days of each other in Japan originally, back in 2004.
