Android 2.2 Froyo 450% Faster Than Android 2.1 in Benchmarks [Android Froyo Outperforms Eclair in Tests; The Irony Is Not Everyone Has Android 2.1 Yet, Let Alone Froyo]

One of the most important Google products to be announced at Google I/O next week is going to be Android 2.2 also known as Froyo. While the newest firmware isn’t available to the masses yet, we did see a video of a Google Nexus One running Flash thanks to Froyo and today we have a benchmark test which shows how fast Android 2.2 is compared to Android 2.1.

Both Froyo and Eclair have been put to the test thanks to an application called Linpack which measures efficiency and speeds in MFLOPs or Millions of Floating-point Operations Per Second. Android 2.2 did very well and it’s definitely the OS you should be looking for your Android smartphone in the near future.

Here’s how the test went down:

  • Nexus One running Android 2.1 gets about 6.5-7 MFLOPS
  • HTC Hero averages a measly score of about 2 MFLOPS (“the phone is pretty slow indeed”) with Android 2.1
  • And the Nexus One with Android 2.2 (Froyo)…37.5 MFLOPS.

The numbers for the Froyo firmware look really great and show that Android 2.2 is 4.5 faster and more efficient than Android 2.1. These are some remarkable stats but that doesn’t mean that when Froyo will come out, it will be 450% better than Android 2.1. It will surely be a lot faster and therefore it will offer you a better Android experience. We’re certainly expecting Google to make Android 2.2 a lot more efficient considering that it will have to deal with Flash, which we all know from various thoughts circling the Internet, is a resource-hungry plugin, but one we need to take advantage of the Internet for now.

The testing above, even if it wasn’t officially conducted by Google, also reminds us of an important issue with Android 2.1: not everyone has it yet! Similarly, not so many people will have access to Froyo right after launch. We all know how long it takes carriers and manufacturers to come up with Android updates so it might be a while until Froyo becomes really available to the crowds.
