Google Editions To Offer 4 Million Books At Launch?
A week or so ago, we reported on the story that Google was preparing to turn Google Books into a digital bookstore and begin selling “Google Editions” which would be platform-agnostic eBooks. The idea is catching on, and Google looks like they might be lining up some big numbers for the launch of these “Google Editions”.

Japan Today is reporting that Google has got an additional 25,000 authors and publishers to agree to let them sell their books through “Google Editions”. Remember that Google unveiled this new digital bookstore at a publishing conference in New York. All the publishers who spoke to the press following Google’s announcement seemed pleased that Google was bringing a platform-agnostic eBook store (unlike the Nook, iPad and Kindle).
In addition to the 25,000 new authors and publishers that will be coming to Google Books, the search site already includes another 4 million books indexed by Google Books that are out of copyright or put there by their publishers.
Remember that eBook pricing war that took place before the iPad was released? Don’t expect Google to support Amazon’s $9.99 eBook price. Japan Today goes on to report that Google will allow publishers to set whatever price they want, which really will kill any future possibility of $9.99 being set as the de facto price of eBooks.

Regardless of what Google now says about pricing, the simple facts of supply and demand will continually lower the prices of all ebooks. Publishers are fighting this tooth and nail but it’s a losing battle for them. As an Indie author, I applaud every giant step the ebook industry takes as it’s constantly leveling the playing field, forever changing publishing and reading along the way.
