Android Takes Second Place from iPhone in US Market

Google's Android Kicks iPhone OS from Number 2 Spot and Takes Over in US Market Share

Ever since the iPhone hit the market it’s been an utter success, securing itself as the second most widely used smartphone platform in the United States behind Research in Motion’s BlackBerry. However, with just a handful of devices on the market (iPhone 3G/3GS) and a new one on the way it was only a matter of time before it was kicked off the leaderboards only to have another, more widely available operating system take its place. Can you guess what mobile operating system that happens to be? If you guessed Google’s Android, you would be correct.

It was recently announced that Google’s Android mobile operating system is now the second most widely used smartphone operating system in the US smartphone market. According to numbers, this means our little green robot friend now has a 28% marketshare trailing the BlackBerry OS which is at 36%. This means Apple’s iPhone is now the third most widely used smartphone platform in the United States with a 21% marketshare.

Like I mentioned above, this was bound to happen;  everyday you hear of a new Android powered smartphone getting released on a plethora of carriers while the iPhone OS is limited to just 2 devices and one carrier (in the United States, anyways).

But enough about the iPhone as this is a great victory for Android and the guys over at Google. One of the main gripes consumers have had regarding Android is the fact that there weren’t as many good applications, and applications in general, as the iPhone’s App Store has. Analysts pointed to the fact that the developers would go where the money is and in this case, market share means money.

Now that Google’s Android is the number 2 mobile operating system in the United States we are sure to see developers flock to the platform, frantically pumping out mobile applications left and right, if they haven’t already.
