Android 2.1 Available for Motorola Milestone; for HTC Hero Not so Much [Motorola Milestone Gets Android 2.1 Update But Sprint HTC Hero Not Sure It Needs It Yet]
I do not own an Android smartphone (yet!) but, with each day that goes by, I am starting to get the frustration of some Android users that have been waiting for Android updates for what seems to be an interminable period of time. And I am only writing about it!

We talked a lot about Sprint’s HTC Hero and Samsung Moment Android 2.1 imminent updates and then just about the HTC Hero which was supposed to get its Android 2.1 on May 7. Naturally none of it was true, no matter what those leaked screenshots said. An official Sprint forum admin had this to say on a thread dedicated to the Android 2.1 update for the Hero:
Closing this thread because I don’t want folks to think that 2.1 is coming out on the 7th.
God forbid customers would think Sprint is ready to bring the update to the crowds! I wonder if they will update the HTC EVO 4G to Froyo when the time comes…
At least some Android 2.1 users are finally happy out there. I am referring to Motorola Milestone customers in Europe which are about to get their much awaited update. The Android 2.1 download is already available and in case you happen to own the Milestone, which is the worldwide version of the Motorola Droid, then you should get it already.
The Android 2.1 for the Milestone will be initially available as an OTW (over-the-wire) PC download but an OTA (over-the-air) download will follow in the very near future.
What will the Android 2.1 update bring you? Here’s a quick list of new features available all on the official Motorola site:
- Speech to Text Support – for English only
- Animated Wallpapers
- Up to 9 home screens
- Facebook App and Widgets
- Google Maps Update – personalized suggestions, synchronization with the desktop and multitouch support
- New Help Center
- Bluetooth support
- Security updates: Prevents unauthorized pattern lock bypass and PIN security and local device wipe following PIN error input
- 3D Gallery view in landscape orientation for the music player
- “ongoing battery life optimization”
- Manual email account removal
Happy with that, Milestone owners? Do let us know how it all works out for you!
