AT&T Officially Releases iPad International Data Plans
AT&T today has released their international data plans for the Apple iPad. The service will be available in over 90 countries. Nevertheless, it doesn’t come cheap if you’re a heavy-content user.
AT&T initially has four “Data Global Add-On” packages available, starting at $25 per month for 20MB. That might be enough if you wish to check some e-mails and update your Facebook status occasionally.
However, you would probably want to utilize your iPad for more content-heavy activities, like watching YouTube clips, downloading apps and catching up on articles in your RSS reader.
In that case, you would need the 200MB data plan that would cost you a hefty $200 per month.
The San Francisco Chronicle recently pointed out what AT&T’s domestic 250MB data plan could get you, which doesn’t seem like a lot either:
- About 35 minutes of YouTube video at standard-definition
- OR about 8-10 minutes of YouTube or iTunes video at 720p hi-definition
- OR about 70 songs from iTunes
- OR a few thousand Web pages and typical email usage
- OR more than 4,000 Facebook photos
AT&T’s international data plans will service more than 90 countries. Users can purchase these plans directly from their iPad’s Cellular Data settings on a month-by-month basis. iPad doesn’t have an auto-renew feature, so you would have to remember to repurchase every month.
The international data plans are more likely to target iPad users who wish to use the device when heading overseas for a vacation or business trip. As a plan for everyday usage for users living outside of the US, it’s definitely too expensive.
