Sprint Android 2.1 Update Finally Coming to HTC Hero & Samsung Moment
One of the most important problems with Google’s Android is firmware fragmentation. There are plenty of hot Android smartphones but unfortunately for their owners, they run various Android versions from Android 1.5 to Android 2.1. Thus not everyone can have the same user experience at the same time.

Froyo, or Android 2.2, rumored to arrive at some point after Google’s I/O event this May, will be a major update as it’s said to bring native Flash support, among other things of course, but how many carriers and manufacturers will be ready to update their current phones to Android Froyo?
Most of these devices haven’t even gotten Android 2.1, or Eclair, yet and by the time they will receive it, users will want to install Froyo instead.
The direct competition, iPhone OS, doesn’t have the same problems. Apple’s latest firmware version, not counting iPhone OS 4.0 which hasn’t been rolled over officially yet, is iPhone OS 3.1.3. Even if v3.1.3 has some issues, which we talked about here on TFTS, users have still updated their iPhones to iPhone OS 3.1.3. And even if some people keep using iPhone OS 3.1.2, all iPhone owners have a pretty similar user experience which is exactly what Google should be aiming for.

Sprint’s Android phones, the HTC Hero and Samsung Moment are definitely some fine gadgets, but they didn’t receive Android 2.1 yet. The Eclair is now rumored to be available very soon. In fact, according to the leaked screenshot above, the Moment should get its update this week while the Hero will be running Eclair at some point next week.
The update will be available as an over-the-air download to both Moment and Hero owners. So make sure you have plenty of battery left, check Sprint’s website on a regular basis and get ready to receive that 80MB or 117MB update, for the Moment and Hero, respectively, really soon.
The only problem with that OTA update could be the fact that the Moment doesn’t really have what it takes to handle such updates. We’ll be looking forward to see how your Eclair update goes, so, by all means, tell us about it in the comments section below.

It’s about time! I have already “tested” android 2.1 dd03 and dd10. I wonder which version they will go with.
The update will be over the wire (OTW) not over the air (OTA)
Most of the latest info states that these will both me OTW (Over the wire) updates due to the size. Even with full 3G coverage, ~80MB takes roughly 45 minutes to download. ~115MB would take an hour or so.
This is so stupid and pointless. If in fact that screen-shot is from Sprint, it says that the 2.1 update for the Moment will be out by April 30th. That was 2 days ago, and there is still no update. So why post it now? Sprint has given NO information for a specific release date. Not on there website, not on Twitter (or Twit as I call it). So why post this pointless dribble unless it’s to get more traffic for this site? More traffic = more ads seen = more money.
I won’t get my hopes up again. If it comes it comes. I was really looking foward to it in feb.
@Slayer, Unfortunately I haven’t found Android 2.1 for HTC Hero or Samsung Moment on a bar stool waiting to be revealed to the world. Nor did anyone contact me directly telling me the update is coming. What I found was a leak worth sharing with the world and pointed you guys to the actual source of it where there’s also a discussion you can follow. Needless to say that I posted it on the same day I read it (somewhere else, which means that others also published it two days later, imagine that!), not that I have to explain any of this to you, do I?
On the same note we’ve seen this before with the Motorola Droid Android 2.1 update which took its time to arrive. Are you saying leaks and rumors are not worth covering anymore?
Someday when I’ll have the time I might be able to also comment on the way you do your job.
@ everyone else, yes, an OTW update sounds more plausible. We’ll definitely return with more details on this as they become available, whether official or not.
How many “leaked” memos and secret dates from Sprint Tech Support have there been in the last 3 months? Then everyone has to start complaining Sprit missed their date. Sprint has said nothing about a roll out date. So yes, this is not news. It is the same old publish a document that may or may not be from Sprint. The news should be when Sprint announces a date for the release. Watch this date come and go without 2.1 being released.
You will not see an update until END of June. Sprint’s tweet about it: http://twitter.com/sprint/status/12125455438
Thanks for your update. While I agree with your point that Google should do better in providing OS updates. I do have 2 points to add though:
1. Apple has a tight lock on the hardware used to run its iPhone OS, which is why it may be able to centralized and expedite (not concurring that they do) their Os updates. rolling out an update that will work on tens of different hardware mixes, is far more complicated.
2. Even with the controlled hardware pool that Apple has, it usually requires owners to buy new hardware for major updates. Many devout iPhone users, have to change their phones every year to keep getting the latest and best updates.
I would also like to add, that due to the universally-open nature of Android (i.e. no hardware and carrier locks), not only Google, but also hardware manufacturers such as Samsung, Motorola and HTC, as well as service carriers such as T-Mobile, Sprint & Verizon need to all work hand-in-hand to bring timely and easy-to-apply updates to our devices.
@Dave Thanks for the tweet link. It says. Early Q2. If that stands for 2nd quarter, end of June would be late 2nd quarter.
To me early Q2 should mean within the first two weeks of May, otherwise we are in the latter half of Q2.
