Polaroid Bounces Back With The Polaroid 300 Instant Camera [Looks Exactly Like The FujiFilm Instax Mini 7S]

Yesterday I wrote about the odd choice of Polaroid tapping into the gaming accessories market. Today, it looks like Polaroid is utilizing what it knows in photography and has announced the Polaroid 300 instant camera. However, I’m puzzled as to why it looks exactly like the FujiFilm Instax Mini 7S.

When I first saw the media release of the Polaroid 300, it looked extremely familiar. I went into the cupboard to whip out my FujiFilm Instax Mini and the only difference I can spot so far is the branding. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, looks exactly the same.

It looks like I’m not the only one who has spotted this design similarity. Someone from Engadget has identified the Polaroid 300 as a rebrand of FujiFilm’s Instax Mini. I’m also puzzled as to why the giant photo company has decided to replicate the design.

The Polaroid 300 will use instant-processing film that comes in a pack of 10 for $10. The camera itself will set you back for $90. Yes, even the film and pricing strategy is very similar to the Instax.

Once you insert the film cartridge into the camera and load it up with four AA batteries, you’re ready to point, shoot and develop. The 58 x 86mm photo will come out from the top.

The Polaroid 300 has already generated negative responses from photo-enthusiasts and tech bloggers. Essentially at $1 for a small, not-so-clear photo, it’s very expensive compared to just getting digital camera photos developed.

Nevertheless, it’s the novelty factor, not the quality that will get people purchasing the camera. I must admit that there’s still that element of fun and surprise as I watch the image slowly appear on the instant film. The Polaroid 300 certainly won’t replace your digital point-and-shoot, as producing happy snaps from a holiday could end up costing more than the plane ticket.

The Polaroid 300 will hit stores in May and and comes in black, blue and red. My tip would be to just purchase the FujiFilm Instax Mini instead and save yourself around $20. Plus, the Instax Mini comes in the colors white and chocolate.
