Apple Steam Client Coming on May 12 Only, According to Valve

New Public Release Date for Valve’s Mac Steam Client Made Official: May 12

It seems like only yesterday we gave gamers the good news that Apple is finally going to work with Valve to have a full blown Steam client ready by the end of April. Well it’s the end of April, Mac gamers, and the public Steam client for Mac hasn’t arrived yet. Moreover Valve announced that the Apple Steam client will be made available only on May 12 which is almost two weeks later than we anticipated.

And they didn’t have much of an announcement, really:

Valve today announced the public release of Steam for the Mac is May 12. Please stay tuned for more information.

Valve has been testing Steam for Mac in an invitation-based beta program and we can only assume that things are going pretty smoothly but not quite according to plan. Steam for Mac is coming a little later than announced but the good news here is that it hasn’t been canceled.

And it looks like Valve is really interested in offering gamers that prefer Apple’s Macs for gaming the same features Windows users already enjoy on their Steam platform. Mac users that love gaming will get their favorite titles at the same time Windows and Xbox 360 users get theirs.

Valve also promises support for one more crucial feature, multiplayer support for both Windows and Mac users. That means Apple owners will be able to play their favorite games against all their Windows-using friends which is definitely something I’d be interested in.

When it comes to actual titles, you’ll be happy to know Valve is bringing all its famous games to the Mac Steam platform. That means you’ll be able to play Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2 and, most importantly, Portal 2 which is coming later this year ready for both Mac and Windows platforms, right on your new Mac.

In case you decide to get one of those 2010 MacBook Pro laptops, please let us know how those Core i5 and i7 perform during intensive gaming! Do they overheat?
