Adobe’s Flash 10.1 Coming to Android in June [Long Awaited Flash Update Brings Compatibility to Google's Android]

If you haven’t been living under a rock you’ll know that in terms of fondness for Adobe’s Flash platform, Steve Jobs is anything but a fan. He has stated the reasons he thinks Flash will never be good on a mobile device (like the iPhone) countless times. And on top of that, Microsoft’s General Manager of Internet Explore, Dean Hachamovitch, hopped on board too saying that HTML5 will take the place of Flash, implying that Adobe’s platform would eventually die off. But honestly, who still uses Internet Explorer anyways?

Seriously though, despite the constant backlash Adobe has been getting for their Flash platform they are showing no signs of shutting down operations anytime soon. Any why would they? Considering Flash is still estimated to be on about 99% of Internet enabled computers. To put that into comparison, Adobe estimates that while Flash has a 99% market penetration Java is at 77% and Apple’s Quicktime is at only 61%. However, the debate is surrounding mobile phones and not Internet enabled computers. When it comes to mobile phones, very few have the ability to display feature rich Flash content.

Luckily, Adobe’s CTO, Kevin Lynch, has just went on record as saying the following:

“We look forward to delivering Flash Player 10.1 for Android smartphones as a public preview at Google I/O in May, and then a general release in June.”

Of course there is really no telling if Adobe will be able to deliver on a mobile version of their popular Flash platform but given their history, I have faith in them. I mean, I don’t know why Steve Jobs doesn’t considering most of Apple’s design staff most likely uses Adobe’s Photoshop almost exclusively.

Either or, we’re going to have to wait until Google I/O before we get a glimpse at this new Android-enabled Flash 10.1. Alternatively, Google has also been quoted to have said in the past that the next version of Android, entitled Froyo, will ship with Flash support.

Your move Jobs.
