Acadalus Camera Tripod Head Self-levels [Dr. Carl Kosh Creates An Electronic Tripod Head With A Built-in Inclinometer]

Dr. Carl Koch has created the Acadalus CPS-H1 self-leveling tripod for those who are tired of wasting time in trying to self-adjust a tripod. Manually adjusting the tripod on very uneven ground means that by the time you’ve fiddled around with everything, you’ve probably just missed out on a great shot.

Dr. Carl Koch feels your frustration of adjusting your tripod and has come up with the Acadalus electronic self-leveling tripod head. Koch currently runs Foto Care, a photo specialty store in Manhattan and was a former managing director of Sinar AG.

Koch came up with the concept as he was photographing outside in Switzerland on a cold, frosty night. Freezing and irritated as he had problems trying to manually level his tripod. After that night, he began searching for a quicker and better solution. Koch remarked that:

I searched the Web to buy one but I couldn’t find anything. And I remembered how we solved things in the good old Sinar days. You find capable people to help you build a solution… In photography, I was used to having a nice technical solution, such as autofocus, for everything. So I thought why not do the same thing with a tripod head.

For the next four years, Koch and and a team of seven other people, went to work on the project in a room next to Koch’s garage.

What they came up with is the Acadalus CPS-H1. The electronic tripod head uses a digital inclinometer that automatically levels the head in seconds at a touch of a button. If you feel like fiddling around, you can make manual adjustments with a keypad on the side of the head.

Before you get too excited about this and head out to purchase one, you might want to take a look at the price tag first. The Acadalus goes for a hefty sum of $5,000. Extra accessories such as the power cable and the battery charger could tip the grand price to $5,600.

Well, looks like I won’t be buying one any time soon. As Koch points out, the sophisticated device is more ideal for professional architectural, panoramic or studio photographer.
